Should newborn babies wear socks in the summer?

If you’re a new parent, you may have many questions about how to dress your newborn for warmer weather while keeping them comfortable. One of the most popular questions parents ask is, ‘Should newborn babies wear socks in the summer?’ Let’s take a look at why socks are important for infants and when to take them off.

Babies have much more difficulty regulating their body temperature compared to adults. If your baby was born at a low birth weight or premature, they will need even more help to keep warm. Cotton socks are breathable and gentle on your little one’s sensitive skin and are perfect for newborns, especially in early summer when the temperatures are still cool in the UK.

As babies only sweat from their neck, hands, feet and head, they can become overheated, so when the temperature rises, putting socks on your newborn baby will limit their ability to cool down. As a guide, look at what you’re wearing and add one more layer. As it isn’t recommended for babies under the age of six months to wear sunscreen, when you’re outside with your little one, light and breathable full-coverage clothes will keep your baby’s skin out of direct sunlight.

At the peak of summer, when the nights are very warm, a vest and a nappy are all your baby needs to sleep in; no socks necessary. Don’t worry though; you’ll be able to put the cute outfits and socks back on your baby when the weather breaks after a couple of days - it is the UK, after all!

Babies born at the height of summer will need a variety of outfits, these include,

  • Lightweight sleepsuits made of cotton that are breathable and comfortable
  • Short-sleeved bodysuits to provide an extra layer under their sleepsuit or worn on their own when the nights are hot
  • Sleeveless bodysuits are ideal for warmer weather and can be layered under their outfit
  • Cotton socks are breathable and add a layer of protection from UV rays, so you can protect your baby from head to toe
  • A sun hat will protect their face and head from the sun and keep them cool

In the summer, layers are essential when dressing your newborn, as they can easily be removed or added depending on where you’re going that day and how you’re getting there. Keep a few layers of clothing and a spare pair of socks in your changing bag so your newborn is summer-ready.
